Our history

Once upon a time

in times of drought and scarcity the orphan boy appeared. He went knocking from door to door asking for what no one had. A sandwich, a stiff tortilla, something to paint the stomach. The low water had struck even according to what they told me. A shadow of deep lack that left the mountain region in a state of destitution. Without finding sustenance, the boy continued walking until he found a man shelling some malformed ears that he had protected and that barely reached a half double. Without further conversation and with a gesture of solidarity, the old man would winnow the cobs that still had the smallest grains in his heart. Upon receiving them, the boy gratefully turned around and silently opened a furrow and carefully sowed. With his intention he went through the drought and the clouds came with rain. Seeing that the seeds germinated and the plant grew by itself, the boy, satisfied with his work, said goodbye and returned the way he came to later raise a milpa and become the Smallest Corn.

The audacity of his intention. The courage to be young, to dream, to ask if it is possible and to answer yes, it is. The value of not only breaking the rules but changing them in favor of life. To declare it and to do it.

The civil association "El Maíz Más Pequeño" was born in 2010 under the freshness of a capulín with the intention of serving the community and after years and a decade of venturing far, of seeing and listening to what is happening today, now we continue with steps firm, with complete words, occupying classrooms, kitchens and landscapes, opening new spaces for rehearsal and exchange, anticipating the times to come and asking the young people and heirs of the territory, and what do you want?

Connecting as human beings with the territory is an experience that implies linking ourselves consciously and affectively with nature, with the landscape, with the people with whom we cohabit, with their needs, pains and worldviews. Throughout these years there have been innumerable events and moments that have moved us to action, to protect the territory and its people, to seek justice, peace, development in connection and balance with the goods and services that the territory offers us as a provider of life.

Words that have accompanied us

“Take care of the things of the earth.
Do something, cut the wood, work the land,

plant nopales, plant magueyes.
You will have what to eat, what to drink, what to wear.
With that you will be standing, you will be true,

with that you will go.
With that you will be talked about, you will be praised,

with that you will make yourself known.”

-Huehuetlatolli

“When the navigator begins the voyage, he prepares his ship, studies his route, plans his itinerary and sets sail; can't do anything else. He cannot know what storms will hit him or whether he will return. But sail…”

-Edward Rutherford
